On Friday 21st September Dr Paul Whittaker OBE, a profoundly Deaf musician, performer and motivational speaker from Huddersfield came up to Moray to deliver a variety of workshops on songs in British Sign Language (BSL). Dr Paul started his visit off with a visit to Hythehill Primary School in Lossiemouth where he led a whole school assembly and then delivered a workshop for the primary 5 class. Not only did Dr Paul raise Deaf awareness but he also took the development of 1+2 languages to a whole new level with BSL now being a third language option within the school.
Friday and Saturday evening saw two packed workshops led by Dr Paul at St James Church and Sfear Kickboxing in Lossiemouth. Complete BSL novices and more experienced signers got together and developed their understanding of BSL through song.
From 10am to 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday Dr Paul worked with fluent singers and interpreters developing their knowledge and understanding of translating songs into BSL, these workshops challenged and inspired the participants in equal measure.
Moray BSL services not only arranged for Dr Paul to come to Moray but are also very proud to have facilitated his visit to Hythehill Primary School.”
